Hockey India Brings Back Blue Jersey for Asian Games 2026, Saffron Row Takes a Backseat
The Indian hockey team’s jersey has once again become a talking point in Indian sports. After switching from its traditional blue to a saffron-coloured jersey for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, Hockey India has now selected blue as its first-choice colour for the upcoming Asian Games 2026 in Japan. Saffron, however, has not been completely removed and will remain the secondary colour option.
Why Was the Jersey Changed to Saffron?
The original switch from blue to saffron was announced ahead of the 2026 Hockey World Cup. Hockey India explained that the change was primarily related to visibility on blue synthetic hockey pitches. According to the federation, the traditional blue kit could blend with the playing surface and make it harder to distinguish players during fast-paced matches.
Saffron was eventually selected after yellow and other alternatives were considered. Hockey India also highlighted the colour’s association with the Indian national flag.
However, the decision quickly became controversial. Several former Indian hockey players questioned the move away from the traditional blue identity. There were also questions within Hockey India’s own leadership about how the decision had been taken. Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey said he and members of the federation’s leadership were not adequately consulted before the new jersey was publicly unveiled.
Blue Returns for Asian Games 2026
For the Asian Games, Hockey India has communicated blue as its first preference and saffron as the second option to the Indian Olympic Association. Both the men’s and women’s teams are therefore expected to return to a blue-led kit for the tournament.
Importantly, this should not be described as a permanent cancellation of the saffron jersey. Hockey India has only confirmed its colour preference for the Asian Games, while the final kit design and future tournament colours remain subject to separate decisions.
More Than Just a Jersey Colour
For Indian hockey fans, blue is more than just a colour. It has been closely associated with the identity of Indian hockey teams for decades. The return of blue is therefore likely to be welcomed by supporters who felt that the traditional identity should have been retained.
The Asian Games also carry major sporting importance because the tournament is linked to qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. India will now enter the competition with the focus shifting away from the jersey debate and back towards performance on the field.
The Bigger Question
The jersey controversy highlights an interesting balance between tradition, visibility, branding and sporting identity. A change in colour may appear simple, but for a national team, its kit can carry years of history and emotional significance.
Now that blue has been made the first-choice colour for the Asian Games, the bigger question is no longer about the jersey—but whether Indian hockey can turn this renewed sense of identity into success on the field.
